Kanji was in that perfect state of blissful meditation that only a genie could achieve when he got the Call.

There was once a time that the Call could thrill him beyond anything. Now, as he often had to lately, he suppressed a sigh. Maybe this time the whelp will ask me to do something worthy of me…

He let himself be as smoke as he poured out of the opening of his lamp. Then he coalesced into his true form, large, majestic –

He struck his head against the low ceiling.

With a grunt, he surveyed the room. They were underground – Kanji’s mind helpfully supplied the word, “basement.” The genie noted that the room was furnished with well worn modern day furniture, and a long table against the wall was loaded with food and drink. He was faced with a crowd of people who stared back at him, eyes wide. None looked to be above the age of 16. One of them whispered in an admiring tone, “Dude!”
