“Watch this,” said the man in the in the striped shirt that hung loosely outside his pants. “You won’t believe what you are about to see.”
The man at whom these words were aimed was older and dressed as if he were a stranger in the crowd. He was wearing grey slacks and a long-sleeved powder blue shirt that was pressed with sharp creases and damp at the armpits. He was also wearing a look of having heard it all before and not ready to be impressed.
The first man read the expression clearly and added, “No, I’m serious. You are not going to believe this.”
The expression of the second man did not change. The one-way conversation between the two men was interrupted by a booming voice over a loudspeaker.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the voice began. “Introducing the next Congressman from the fourth district of the great state of Iowa, Mr. Brent Lee.”
The man with the striped, untucked shirt joined in the rousing applause that immediately followed the introduction. The man dressed as if he were from another planet swivelled his head to observe the faces in the crowd.
