Grandmother’s Ashes

by Mark Douglas Stafford

THE GIRL CALLED ME ‘GRANDPA’ which would usually annoy me. But this one managed to touch what passed for the tick-tock of my heart and I had no trouble giving her the time of day. Sometimes she would stand there with adoring eyes, longing to reach out and touch me. Her mother had forbidden any kind of contact, as had her mother and her mother’s mother, going right back into the family’s blue-blood history. The girl worshiped her mother so much there was no way she would ever disobey, but there was no rule against talking to me and this she would often do. It was our little chats over the years that had endeared her to me so completely.
