How to Photograph Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

Don Mammoser

Take a massive rock mountain and carve half of it into the giant head and legs of a lion. Include a narrow, cliff-hanging pathway and a dizzying circular stairway for ascending to the mountaintop in order to witness spectacular views over the acres and acres of zen-like landscaped grounds. Finally, add in numerous (supposedly) crocodile-filled reflecting pools and other impressive water garden features and you have an idea of what Sigiriya offers for an intrepid photographer. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and often called the eighth wonder of the world. Though perhaps not as well known as other wonders of the world, Sigiriya never fails to impress anyone who visits, and a photographer could spend days here and not exhaust the possibilities. Ready your camera!
