The first of July was one of those Chamber of Commerce kinds of days. The cobalt sky over Key West was dotted here and there with cotton-ball clouds ambling off to the northwest on the trade winds.
Though still fairly early in the morning the temperature was in the lower nineties and it was more than willing to fry the hide off anyone foolish enough to leave the shade. But shade’s where it’s at, and the same breeze pushing the clouds made it comfortable if you could manage to find some. The only thing that could have made the day better would have been a hammock slung between a pair of palm trees and a pretty girl in a sarong to keep bringing some kind of frozen drink in a coconut shell; hold the paper parasol, please.
