Urashima was a dutiful son. He respected his parents and followed their wishes in everything. His name was mentioned everywhere as an example to other children. Throughout the island, there was not a better son than Urashima.

As he grew into manhood, Urashima thought of taking a wife, someone to look after his parents in their old age. For Urashima was an only child, and all day he was out in his fishing-boat while his parents sat alone.
