It was a lovely, quiet farm house in rural Virginia, and the realtor had nothing but glowing praise for the peacefulness, easy access to the nearby towns, and modern appliances. I’d been more interested in the old barn with the sagging roof and the bedroom with the east-facing window and the faded streak on the wallpaper from decades of sunrises tracing their light onto it.
“I’ll take it,” I’d said, and that had been it. A week later I’d moved in along with Maxie, my faithful basset hound and constant companion since the divorce, and my old IBM Selectric typewriter, which had been around even longer than either the dog or my ex-wife.
