The wheat spread in a golden wash toward the horizon where it meshed with a multicolored sky. A man stood in silhouette, surveying the field and the magnificent Kansas sky. Behind him by a hundred yards, he could hear the sounds of his wife's evening work. Faint smells of roasting chicken and baking bread mingled with the smell of the earth and the sweat of his body. In his left hand he held a head of wheat. Methodically he ground the heel of his right hand into it, feeling it was dry. In his practiced hands the kernel separated from the chaff as easily as lovers parted to lie side by side when all was said and done.
