The Ballad of Sixteen

Part One

There are not many places you see nowadays
where the grass and the water conspire
with the breeze and the rain to create and maintain
a preserve all the world can admire.
But the Everglades breeds many creatures with needs;
In a mangrove, a rattler lies curled
while a crane sends its harsh cry out over the marsh.
It’s a snake-eat-snake, fish-eat-fish world.

This whole swamp’s probably strewn with old dinosaur bones
and more beercans than you can retrieve—
souvenirs old and new—but there’re stories here too;
some that most folks find hard to believe.
My name’s Jumpy Jim Camp and I live in this swamp.
I spend some of my time giving tours.
I was starting to fear I’d seen everything here;
Then I spotted the girl from the sewer.
