This book is dedicated to my grandmother, Pearl Charles, my godfather, Joseph Makse, and my friend, Tobias Allen.
The story was inspired by Marge Stauffer, my great grandfather’s sister, who played the piano brilliantly but did not find a stage.
With respect for her memory and hope to inspire my readers to unlock their talents, I wrote this novel.
“You are not going to music school, Marlene.”
My mother’s words fell like stones on the waxed kitchen floor. My face burned in anger and disbelief. I fixed my dark eyes on hers.
“Dad wanted me to go to music school. He always said so.”
Her green eyes were sad but unyielding.
