CHAPTER I

Gerry held the handle of the knife in her right hand. She carefully worked its point in, made a small slit, then slid the sharp edge along until the gash went from side to side. She placed the knife on the wooden surface against which she was leaning, then stopped to stare at her handiwork. By inserting her right index finger and thumb into the opening, she removed the contents. She fanned the contents out in front of her. Finally, moving closer to the lamp on her left, she picked up a piece of paper and began to read.
