Chapter 1

Easter Lessons

A thousand years ago two ocean-going canoes set out from one of the easterly Polynesian islands around Mangareva. For around two weeks they made their way eastwards across the Pacific until they were able to follow the hunting seabirds to their huge nesting colonies on the island that we now call Rapa Nui or Easter Island. After a thousand years of colonising the islands of the Pacific man had found one of the most isolated pieces of habitable land on the planet.
