It was James Michener who made me put panning for gold in Alaska on my bucket list. When I read his epic novel, Alaska, back in 1988, I knew that someday I would have to fulfill this dream. So, fast forward 23 years and many long hours of working as a critical care nurse, and I was off to Alaska for a summer adventure.

I had taken a tour to Alaska in 2007, a land/sea package that got me to both Fairbanks and Anchorage as well as a 7 day cruise to see the glaciers and old coastal towns like Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, where my gold fever began rising again. There is no doubt in my mind that had I been around in 1898, I would have been one of those crazies who carried a ton of gear over Chilkoot Pass to get to the gold fields! I had gotten an overview of Alaska and knew where I wanted to go to pan. Here is the account of my 2010 trip and my gold panning dream.
