Okay, how it started was that Gary, Jim and Ken (I'm Ken) were gonna go to State on scholarships. We each had a miserable little academic scholarship that paid books and tuition. We, being well educated high school graduates, were supposed to work out food, shelter, laundry, luxury things like that, on our own.
Instead, what we each did was to contact a very nice man named Dan, who worked at State. Dan saw that we were the kind of bright young men that State wanted in their programs and he arranged for us to get real scholarships, that would allow us to learn, live under a roof and eat six meals a day.
Wait just a minute, you ask, "Why would you want six meals a day?"
Well, what we agreed to do was to wrestle for Dan who was the wrestling coach at State. Wrestlers have to watch their weight very carefully in order to fit within a weight class. Gary wrestles at 197 pounds, I wrestle at 174 pounds and Big Jim wrestles heavyweight, which in his case is 285 pounds. By eating six very small meals a day, each of the three of us could lift weights and weigh in with about five percent body fat. The weight that would normally have been taken up by fat is instead taken up by muscle. Muscle is good for a wrestler and for certain other things, as we were to find out somewhat later on.
