PROLOGUE



Darkness was falling in the Forum of Rome. Slaves held flickering torches at intervals throughout the broad, paved plaza, but these served only to throw pools of greater darkness beyond. The crowds had thinned long before the treason trials neared their close; the emperor himself had sought his bed hours ago. Only the praetorian prefect Laetus still presided over the trials.
