Chapter One: The Incident

Nessa had just stepped into the mall restroom when she heard the scream.

She stopped and listened: silence.

She’d never seen anyone on this floor before. In fact, there was no better place to get high during her teeny workday break to make the day go by faster.

She strode in, smiling at the vial of espadrine in her hand. The high-grade stuff had cost a bit, but what the hell. Only the best to get through another stupid day at work…

With a spring in her step, she walked past the gleaming sinks and make-up counters, turned the corner around the translucent wall separating the toilets from the sinks—and froze.

Two big men were there. The man closest to Nessa pointed a gun at her. The other one knelt on the floor over a woman, hands around her neck. The woman gasped as she got one breath in, and then gurgled as he squeezed her neck. Her arms, glistening with blood, clutched at her assailant in futile attempts at self-defense.
