Black Birds

Until I met Hami, I had only taken tests of an intellectual or physical sort. I was used to sitting quietly with a sharpened pencil, plowing my way through literature or philosophy exams. I was used to racing around red clay tracks in Mobile, pitting my speed against the fastest sprinters in the city. These were tests I could prepare for. I studied continually, and I trained hard. I had the grades to prove it. My shelves sagged with trophies. But it wasn't until I met Hami that I discovered there were other kinds of tests. Tests for which there were no study guides, no training programs. And certainly no trophies.
