Chapter 1

My son,

My name is Torka, and although you do not remember me, for our time together was indeed short and long ago, I know you hear of me in the stories of those who will not forgive my actions. And why should they?

I used to watch you with pride as you grew taller and stronger by the day. But since I was exiled by those I once led, I fear my days in this realm are too few to be able to reverse the events that led to the situation that faces us all now, before Rawr-Annak, our moon, our guide and giver of destiny takes me from this world to serve her on the Emerald Plain.

As the years have passed, the thoughts of things that I wish I could have shared with you have been my only companions. Did you know that the name given to our kind, Wolven, in the old language meant “Standing Wolf”? Of course, the old language has been largely forgotten, with few of its words still used today; words which sound strange to other races, but to us sound as welcome as the rain after a long season of sun. Had I been able to be with you as you grew, I would have taught you all I knew of it.
