The ambulance raced down the quiet residential street, sirens blaring. Potholes rocked the vehicle from side to side, and the car ceding the right of way before them was exciting. It was a beautiful summer morning, and most of the rush-hour morning commute had died down, leaving the roads open and easy to navigate.
Haley was a newly minted paramedic, and she rode in the passenger seat on the way to their latest call. Having been on the job for just over two months, she felt prepared for anything. She liked helping people, and had been a candy striper in high school. While being a paramedic was demanding, she enjoyed the challenge and the rewarding feeling that came from saving lives. She even liked her partner Frank, no matter how much he pretended the feeling wasn’t mutual. Their destination was a park across the street from her old high school. Haley was secretly excited to see how much it had changed since she'd graduated. She fondly remembered the park benches that had been claimed by different cliques, especially the hours spent after school reading under the giant oak tree in the center of the park. She also thought of the many friends that she had made there, and how she had befriended the little kids who frequented the monkey bars and swings. She had even been known to hang upside down from the ancient and rusted monkey bars while preschoolers squealed in delight.
