All characters in Unbreakable are fictional, as are the events surrounding them. As a derivative of my nonfiction work, the events are naturally dramatized and, in some cases, relocated. However, it is not my intent to thereby mislead the reader or portray unnecessarily incendiary events. The sexual crimes happen offstage, but were part of a massive and systematic rape program executed by the Serbs. A Serbian man married to a Muslim woman also publicly raped his young daughter from contempt for her mixed heritage.
Symbolic crucifixion and grotesque mutilation were documented war crimes and for the existence of the “Red Room” at one of the Serbian camps in Bosnia, please refer to Slaughterhouse Bosnia, written by David Reiff.
