How It All Began

Phone calls have a lot to do with fate. Like the one two years ago that changed my life forever. The one when a state trooper named Sergeant Nelson, with a few awkwardly spoken words, snuffed out my dreams of a blissful retirement together with my wife Lisa. It was Sergeant Nelson who told me the love of my life had been in a car accident with a drunken driver. She was hit head on by the stupid bastard, who of course survived the deadly crash. Only one person died. Only my Lisa.

In that defining moment, I lost what I loved most in life. At the same time I discovered an inner strength I never really knew I had. I guess adversity can do that to you – if you don’t go off the deep end first. It was not long after that phone call that I decided, at age 60, to do what Lisa and I had dreamed about. I quit my job as an environmental consultant in Massachusetts, sold our house in a Boston suburb, took the cash from Lisa’s life insurance policy, and moved into a condominium south of Asheville, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
