Chapter 1

The woman was lying on his arm. That was what woke him – the numb, tingling sensation crawling up from his fingers to his elbow. Her shoulder blade was cutting into his bicep. He pushed her off. The woman rolled over, but didn't wake. Flexing his fingers, he worked the blood back into his arm and watched the woman wriggle to get comfortable again. She lay on her stomach, impaled by a shaft of sunlight that cut through the darkness of the basement through a hole in the decaying floor boards above. Motes of dust floated down the light and disappeared into the brownness of her skin. The skin drew his fingers to her. They ran across the invisible hairs of her back to her hip. He sniffed at her – nice – but he didn't feel like sex. He had to piss.
