Foreword

A word about reality in fiction. The concept of telling a “truth” in a fictional account may seem like an oxymoron at first glance. But the fact is that almost all fiction is based on some true event or character. Fiction takes a routine kind of truth, and attempts to make it interesting by changing things up and spinning a yarn about it. But sometimes that process runs into trouble, particularly in western cultures. There is a penchant in such cultures to insist that young people don’t engage in sexual behavior. Ask any parent about the sexual experience of their teenage son or daughter and they’ll stoutly tell you “My daughter/son is a virgin!” And they believe it too.
