Meg bounded from her 1968 yellow Volkswagen as it continued to jump and lurch forward in the parking spot — even once she had shut it off, an ongoing problem that, as usual, she tried to ignore. “I need to get this damn car fixed,” Meg said to her friend Trisha as she pushed the buzzer to get into her sister Lizzy’s place at the Cedar Hill Apartments. “I can’t afford shit; I should never have bought that car in the first place.”
