Chapter One

My back began to hurt as I lay on the hard desert mountainside of Red Rock Canyon, but the stars were too beautiful to look away. They winked and sparkled against the black veil of the night sky as I took a deep breath of the dusty aroma surrounding us. The air was cool and dry, a lot cooler than I would have expected for a summer night in Las Vegas; we were still getting used to the weather change from our small, country town in Illinois where the summer nights still clung to you in a layer of moisture from the humid day.

My brother, Brandon, had just finished setting up the tent before the sun had set. He flipped his shaggy, black hair out of his eyes and looked off into the distance. His three best friends, also his band mates, had gone off to explore once more before night fell completely. They returned just as my aching back couldn't take the ground any longer.

“Did you guys find anything interesting?” I asked, bending backwards slightly to get the kinks out.
