Lucien fell off his perch and stumbled to his knees, choking in the heavy summer air. After the icy inertia of his stone prison, the hot air was too much, too soon. Wind filled the deserted clearing with the rattle of fire-blackened pines and wrapped the smell of unfamiliar vegetation around his heart. Sanctuary was gone; the tree line closer than he remembered.
Anger clenched down deep in his belly and brought power surging to his hands, traceries of pain and frustration glittering deep in his flesh. He rolled to his feet and stood slowly, leaning on the squat stone plinth for support. Morgaine's mountain stood on the distant horizon, dark as her Unseelie heart.
