Misapplications of Mad Science”

My buddy Bill is one of those geniuses that you hear about sometimes. Our hometown is hardly more than a wide spot in the road but that never bothered Bill much; he mostly lived inside his own head and that was a place as big as the sky.

Bill is one of those guys who can think of an idea and just see how it works. It's like his daydreams come complete with numbered diagrams. He was constantly building or inventing stuff while we were growing up and after a while no one even bothered to seriously compete against him in the science fairs at school.

Of course things like that attract attention and it wasn't too long after graduation that he sort of vanished. Everyone figured that the government had swooped in and snagged him for one of its think tanks, and life went on.

I went into real estate and it got to the point where I was running an office of three agents and a secretary. For my town this was prosperous beyond belief. I never married, though I sort of had my eye on the secretary. It was just idle thought but it got me through sometimes.
