Belham was a lazy, country town, so small that it barely qualified for its own school. Trees lined the streets, the sidewalks were brick and there wasn't a McDonald's to be found. Most of the people who were born there would die there, living out their lives in peaceful simplicity. The farthest most citizens traveled was the sixty-odd miles east to Ridgely, once a year, for their Christmas shopping. However, there had been one soul more adventurous than that. He'd left the town before he turned seventeen, roughly thirty years prior to the events described in this tale. His name was Robert Dole.
