When I first started writing this book, I put Peter’s height at forty inches and forty-five pounds; in other words average for a six-year-old at the time Jake first met him. Then I thought of something. Peter was born in 1894. I’d remembered reading someplace that children today are taller than ever. If so, forty inches may be too tall. First, I checked with my niece, Renee Biedlingmaier, a nurse. She confirmed my suspicions and suggested thirty-four to thirty-six inches. She also suggested thirty pounds, especially since Peter was a neglected child.
