Interview with Bill Rayburn

You are 53 years old. What has been the best year of your life?
Actually, that is an easy answer: 1998.

I had a little money from an inheritence, I was not in a relationship, I enjoyed my job at a weekly newspaper, and I decided to give a direct nod to my passion for romance and sentimentality and go to Paris, my first trip abroad.

Life was good. I had independence, autonomy (job notwithstanding). It was the perfect time for me to go to Paris.
And?
I finagled a month off and spent the entire month of April in Paris. Turns out the trip was much more of a soul-searching, contemplative journey than a vacation or pleasure trip.

As expected, I fell in love with the city. I had a flat in the 6th Arrondissement, very nicely centered on the Left Bank, and I walked everywhere which is far and away the best method to get a feel for any great city.

Ironically, I did very little writing in Paris. I was moved and inspired by so many things, I felt like every day I was a mirror walking down the street.

I have written some brief accounts and memoirs from that incredible month since, however.
Why should I buy and read your stories?
That dépends on what type of consumer/purchaser/reader you are...

I, for example, rarely branch out and cavalierly read an author that I don't know of. Interestingly, since I've lived here in London for almost a year now, I have done more of that, reading new (to me) authors, than ever before, and for the most part my batting average is very high. I've enjoyed almost every one. Who knew?

So there is a "gamble" aspect to purchasing one of my stories.

I try in most if not all of my work to reach a healthy hybrid of thought and emotion, and my goal is to elicit both from the reader. Some people think those are mutually exclusive, and when it comes to certain issues in life, that is probably true. But my best and favorite reading expériences have almost always involved, at various junctures through the book, sitting back, resting the open book on my chest, and letting whatever passage that prompted me to pause wash over me. The ensuing thoughts and emotions, sluiced by that writer's wonderful prose, are nuggets they get credit for unearthing, and I get to enjoy some of the more abstract fruits from their labor.
Who are your favorite authors?
Pat Conroy.

John D. MacDonald.

Robert B. Parker

P.J. O'Rourke

John Grisham
Your passions?
Reading, writing, music, comedy, movies, travel....

The usual suspects for anyone who enjoys thinking.

Give me a shady hammock in the tropics, a good book, a tall gin and tonic.....it's all good at that point....

I also love to cook and eat.
What story(ies) would you recommend of your own?
Most of my fiction is on the fringe of noir...kind of dark, psychological stuff. There are some humorous pièces, some profane.

I tend to delve into subjects and areas that I have lived and experienced such as, for example, suicide.

I am often fascinated by how people react and respond to the tough times in their lives. How they get punched in the nose by life, and then try to get up.

Failure and self-loathing are two common themes in both my fiction and my essays. Those complex psychological premises are always interesting to contemplate. I think my sports background, starting as a young boy, prepared me for my intellectual discovery as an adult that we are much more defined by losing or failing, and how we deal with that, than we are by winning or succeeding.

Metamorphosis.

Anybody can swim WITH the tide. It's when those choppy waves are slapping us in the face that teach us about what's truly Inside.

I'd recommend any or all of the following:

"Train Wreck: Final Stop"

"Roxxy and Laddy Go to Hollywood" (adult language)

"Death of a Talisman"

"A Life Unlived"

"An Afternoon Can Last Forever, in Provence"

"Redford and Newman: Last Call"
Your thoughts on publishing/getting published, in the 21st Century.
@$#%#@$@%$#%@$#%@$
Why do you write?
Very tough question. I'm not sure I have reconciled completely with the answer, if there is one.

I am conflicted.

I need to make a living, which so far I am not. But I need also to enjoy both the craft of writing, and the end result, in order to keep me going back to the well.

I may never succinctly answer this question.
Thanks for being so generous with your time, Bill.
My pleasure. This has been the best interview I've ever given myself.
