Interview with David J. Skinner

Published 2014-07-07.
¿Desde cuándo llevas escribiendo? // How long have you been writing?
--
Although already when I was a child, I wrote short stories, and tried to start a novel, it was not until 2011 when I considered myself to write "seriously".
¿Cuántos libros has escrito? // How many books have you written?
Pecado mortal".

Además de novelas, he escrito algunos relatos.

If we are talking about novels, I already have a total of five completed novels. However, only four of them have seen the light, "Los crímenes del ajedrez", which I self edited in 2012, "La amenaza", published by Libros Mablaz in 2013, and recently, I self-published a hard-boiled nouvelle, "Masacre en Nueva York". Also, in july 2014, M.A.R. had published my novel "August. Pecado mortal".

In addition to novels, I have written some stories. "El hombre eterno y otros once relatos" (on Smashwords you find it with the name "Doce relatos de angustia y muerte") is a compilation of what I consider my top twelve stories to date, and is available in both digital format and paper, worldwide. I also participated with two short stories in an anthology edited by Libros Mablaz, "Sugiéreme", with another in the anthology "El último Borbón", published by Ediciones Irreverentes, and with one short tale in the solidary anthology "Cuentos por la vida".
// Which is your favorite literary genre and why?
--
Thriller and detective story. The reason is simple: those are the ones I like to read.
¿Cuáles son tus próximos proyectos? // What are you working on now and then?
--
For the rest of this year, I will focus on the promotion of "August. Pecado mortal". Among the novels I'm working now, I think the next will be one set in Victorian London, and taking place one year after the famous Jack the Ripper crimes, based on some actual crimes that were not resolved.
¿Cuáles son tus autores favoritos? // Which ones are your favorite authors?
--
I love Stephen King, and the tandem Preston / Child. I also read quite Pérez-Reverte and Dan Brown and changing genres, Isaac Asimov, H. P. Lovecraft and Philip K. Dick.
¿Qué piensas de los autores autoeditados? // What do you think about self-published authors?
Me he encontrado auténticas maravillas.
--
I myself have started walking that way, and I'm somewhere between traditional publishing and self-publishing. As in everything, there are better and worse writers, but I think it's worth giving them a chance, especially people starting. I've found true literary wonders.
// What is the last book you've written?

My latest written and published book chronicles the life of a death row inmate. The story begins in the early 70s, in Nebraska, where R. A. Robertson is about to be executed for murder. As he narrates the events that led him there, to one of the guards, readers will discover if he really deserves to face his destiny. The novel is narrated in first person (almost all, except the final chapter).
¿Por qué escribes? // Why do you write?
--
For the same reason that I read, or watch movies: to live many different lives.
// Are you a writer who invents while writing, or you prepare everything before starting?
--
The truth is that I do not always follow the same pattern. Is there a novel on which I had not prepared anything in advance, while others (the majority, I must admit) I usually have at least a brief summary of the story and the characters.
¿Qué recomendarías a alguien que comienza a escribir? // What would you recommend to someone starting to write?
--
Many tips I cannot give, because I'm almost starting too. They should not have craving for posting. Before a work is released, must be very well polished. To have a child makes you a parent, but not necessarily a good parent, so you don't conform yourselves about being writers if you can become good writers.
