Interview with Davina Carey

Published 2015-01-21.
What are you working on next?
At this moment I am working on the first book in my Hearts and Shadows series, Love and Shadows.
Who are your favorite authors?
Patrica Briggs with her Alpha and Omega novels, P.C. Cast with House of Night series, and Kim Harrison with her Hollows series. Also about a dozen more with truly amazing series that I have almost finished.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My dog Shadow and well books. Knowing there is someone out there who spent time and energy on making words come to life for others is so amazing that I am honored to be a part of their audience. Not to mention there is a whole new world to escape to in every book out there. The characters are like family in every series that I stick to and every new book in that series is like coming home. At least feels like a piece of home not necessarily coming home. That is what gets me up on bad days and keeps me going. It's a great relaxer when I need it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading of course.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly the library and Goodreads, but I have found some pretty great ones on Bookrix. Though I do find them almost anywhere as I like to keep a eye out for any book that looks interesting.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Kinda I really don't remember the name or what it was truly about other than a animal princess but it was an assignment for second grade story time. I was so serious about it that most of the kids in class gathered around me to to their story project. It ended up being a group project when everyone started asking me for advice and to prof read theirs. It was amazing and I really admired my classmates who took the opportunity to push forward and achieve their goal of making a great story. It never really occurred to me that they were asking for my help or that they saw something in me and my story. It was just a chance to be with my friends and do some good and have fun.
What is your writing process?
Sit down and write all day then save it and come back to it in a few days. Then start over and take the pieces I liked in the draft and incorporate into the next try until I get the scene I am working on just right and eventually the book just right as well.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Well the first book I ever read was a dinosaur encyclopedia book I taught myself to read the big words first. The impact it had on me was to always achieve even when it was hard and I had no idea what I was doing until I eventually figured it out. Plus that I loved books on almost every subject. Don't tell anyone but I still love dinosaurs even to this day.
How do you approach cover design?
Do it a million times using software like Photoshop, Gimp shop, Photoscape, and of course paint. I usually end up with many different designs and half the time I can't choose between them until the last minute when I have to.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My computer using adobe digital editions.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Tumblr and Twitter.
Describe your desk
Vintage, old and in need of organizing even though I did that last week. It's unique and is me all the way.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Moore, Oklahoma with my grandpa who gave me the freedom to do just about anything and since it was so peaceful and quiet even on sunny summer days that I was either at the park or reading. It was such a beautiful setting and just perfect for reading. Not to mention that my grandpa spent a hour or two a day at the local library just to sit and read the newspaper or magazines. "Just to get out and walk around" he said. I thing that inspired my love for stories and my dislike for staying in unless there is a book available to read.
When did you first start writing?
Second grade.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Oh no you will not get anything from me. It is a surprise.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has let me edit and publish my book on my terms. I truly like the setup that they have here.
