Interview with Deacon Weeks

Published 2014-03-14.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been writing since I learned that such a thing was possible, creating stories, and writing to answer my own questions about life, religion, and how we relate to one another. It became obvious to me that I have a message to share in the past few years and so I have chosen to make that message available.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Discovery. When I write I am revealing something that the world has never before seen, it is almost like unwrapping a gift and the choice to share it comes along with my own discoveries about whatever I am writing. I don't write blindly but I always organize and outline the thoughts and ideas... still, it is such a privilege to receive the message and be able to reveal it.
What are you working on next?
There are always multiple projects in the works, currently I have about four outlined self-help books waiting to be written. In addition to this I have a completed manuscript of about 250,000 words or so and I am transferring it from handwritten form to .docx and rewriting some of the details. It will be available in three parts the first part will be done by the end of the year.
Who are your favorite authors?
My list is quite extensive and it includes classics like Steinbeck and Dostoyevsky. As well as motivators such as Jim Rohn and Darrin Hardy. I also enjoy the works of C.S. Lewis and the lesser known Darrin Hufford. The list goes on but that is eclectic enough.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The desire to be awake. I am not one of those who would prefer sleeping until noon. Rising early is a joy of mine and I do most of my best thinking in the earlier hours of the day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My time is spent with my family. My wife of 15 years and my three children enjoy one another by sharing life. We may spend time outdoors on our 11 acre property or indoors improving our 200 year old home. We also love to travel and visit extended family.
What is your writing process?
Generally there is one particular thought that I carry around for a few days. Many of these thoughts are too small to funnel down into a book. Those which do, move into a brainstorming phase where I ask myself questions about the subject, "What would a book about this subject look like?" Then I break the subject down into manageable parts which eventually become chapters. The chapters are moved around and manipulated until they fit the proper organization. Each chapter is broken into smaller sections and ideas much like the entire book. When I am done here I take all of the information and create a final draft outline. Once the outline is finished I begin writing the book from my outline. My books are like puzzles that I solve.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
See Spot Run... it had a huge impact on me. The following is my proposed re-write. (We have a beagle named Spot. Not because he has spots or anything like that but because he once peed on my father's sport coat and it left a stain in the shape of a spot. When my father saw this he was so mad that he crashed wildly out of our house with his belt in hand and Spot only a few paces ahead. You should see how Spot reacts anytime I pick up that belt. Dad thought it was funny I would name him Spot after such an incident... he says that my dog will be a "spot" on our driveway if that ever happens again.) Seriously, that was my first book but it meant little to me... I just thought I would have some fun here.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Mesa, Arizona. It is a city outside of Phoenix. There were plenty of interesting characters for a boy growing up in the '90s in this area to create wild stories about. In the same way, there was an opportunity to learn from the behavior of my peers and ultimately unlearn the behavior. My family life was mostly pleasant and my boyhood educations were neighborhood related.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
In grade school, my rendition of the story of Billy the Kid, it was this story that moved me into the advanced writing class and encouraged my writing. I thought I might seek a writing career at this point but I traded that for years of education at the school of hard knocks. It was somewhere during my tenure at Hard Knocks U that I picked up the pen again and here we are.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything that will improve me as person.
