Interview with Michael Guerini

Published 2013-12-25.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a new Horsemanship book that will present a variety of skills challenges to riders and horses alike. Along with this I have a draft of my second story in the Old Towne series (Veterinary Mystery) to compliment Old Towne: Beginnings that was released in 2011.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.R.R. Tolkein, David Baldacci, MaryAnn Myers, Arthur Conan Doyle.....I think I can safely say I have an eclectic taste.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
MY horses and dogs and wonderful life. Yes, there are times when things go wrong....but life is great. Each day I get to work with animals, write, edit, and in my spare time I get to play scientist.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I ride horses, coach people for good horsemanship, and work as a scientist. My horsemanship is all about natural methods that incorporate dressage and listening to the horse.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I just search and look until something catches my attention.
What is your writing process?
I tumble the ideas around in my brain for a few weeks or months and then I normally sit down and in a marathon session create the outline. Then I let that percolate for a few days and jump in and start writing along the outline and work as hard and fast as I can to finish the draft.
How do you approach cover design?
I seek out help. My artistic talents are horrible when it comes to graphics. A fellow author friend of mine is great at this and he helps me out (thanks Ken Howe!!!)
What do you read for pleasure?
Books about horses, sci-fi fantasy dealing with magic and swords, westerns, mysteries.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Right now I have a Kindle (the original version).
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Gilroy California on a small acreage. From the time I can remember I have been surrounded by horses, veterinarians, good horsemanship and so I write about these things because they are all a part of my life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I developed a horsemanship manual for the clinics and lessons I teach and a friend of mine suggested in 2010 that I self-publish. Well I had no idea what that meant but I started down the path and now it almost seems addictive.
