Interview with Dr. T. K. Stone

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and my generation saw southern California in an unique way in the 1950's and 1960's. As a child I loved running barefoot in the orange groves behind my house. In the 1950's I used to watch Jack La Lanne exercise on TV. He used to say, "Exercise is king, nutrition is queen, when you have both, you have a kingdom." My father was in the wholesale produce business and during my childhood I grew up eating the best fruits and vegetables available in California. Loved sports, football, basketball and baseball. I learned how to surf and snow ski during my teenage years. I still love to be outdoors playing with the activities I love. Being raised in southern California and being aware of a healthy lifestyle, my life reflects how much fun it is to be healthy and all the published articles and my ebook are about the benefits of a healthy life that anyone can create for themselves.
When did you first start writing?
English and spelling were my worst subjects. I have a hearing handicap from birth and was very slow to speak, read and write. Math and the sciences were easy for me and all I had to do is listen to the teacher to comprehend science, which my friends had trouble. Didn't plan to go to college but after my Army experience being a combat medic then dental technician, I was inspired to become a dentist. Knowing I had problems with English, I got an early out from the Army and took only one class at a local community college, it was English to prepare me for freshman composition. Had a great teacher and learned grammar and the use of a Thesaurus. My college career was successful because of that first class in English. When I became a professor is when it started to pay-off and have published several articles over the years on health related interests, which are all in my ebook.
What's the story behind your latest book?
When I finished my DDS and started to practice and teach, one of my first patients was a health book publisher. He asked me to write a book for him to publish. He came to a presentation I was asked to give to a local health group. Twenty five years later I wrote the book. I realized many years before that you cannot force anything. So I waited till the book just came out of me. The book, the main part of the book was written in three weeks. When I started to look for a publisher, there were a few interested but when I requested to have the book printed using 100% THC free hemp paper, they all lost interest. That was 2005 and in 2011 I turned the book into an ebook. It is paperless, no trees involved, and I like that.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I know the history of industrial hemp and hemp paper has been used for many years for printing books. When I wrote the book I wanted to have it printed using hemp paper and no publisher would do that. When I learned about ebooks, it was the perfect solution for not using tree paper or recycled tree paper. My carbon footprint is my karma and want to have a small footprint when I pass.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
My success is found all inside me and I am very glad to have found Smashwords for sharing my health experiences in the form of an ebook.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Prior to this ebook, I love sharing my experiences at public presentations. I have given many and the experience of giving a person something to think about and the excitement to see that they get it, for me there is no greater joy. Being healthy is not hard, all ones needs is, to understand some very simple facts that are seen everywhere. We just need to know where to look. We need to see the trees "and" the forest at the same time.
Who are your favorite authors?
I really didn't start to read books until I was eighteen. I faked my way through grammar school and high school with poor grades in all related English subject classes. When I started to read books, they were all about health, mind and body health. These are still my subjects of interest. I enjoy philosophy, metaphysics, mythology, natural sciences, Jungian psychology or anything that will help me create a better life. People like Dr. Herbert Shelton, Dr. Arnold Ehret, Dr. Paul Bragg, Dr. Anne Wigmore, Dr. Norman Walker to name a few health writers. There are so many philosophers and if you read Joesph Campbell or Carl Jung, you will get acquainted with the beat.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
It is so wonderful to be outside. I love to be in the sun, playing with my favorite toy. That toy might be a surfboard, skis, snowboard, tele-skis, windsurf board and sail or a mountain bike. When you have plenty of energy and nutrients, life is great at any age. Sharing life with others is second to sharing life with yourself when you are healthy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a dentist by profession and I love making teeth for people to be able to chew their foods better. I was a dental technician in the Army and learned to make teeth, which then inspired me to become a dentist. Besides private practice, I taught dentistry for many years and enjoy sharing my wisdom and knowledge with others. I enjoy public speaking, especially for people who want to learn about mind/body life.
What is your writing process?
When I have a writing subject, I will record thoughts that come to me over time, during the day, upon waking in the morning, or from dreams. When I have a thought, it may turn into a paragraph and over time an article will emerge. The book was a different process. When I decided to write the book, I went to a university library to study books and after a year had not written a single word. I had jury duty and it was very emotional for me the subject matter and I was dismissed. That day I expressed the emotions in a poem. It was the first poem I ever did. My friend suggested to me that my book could be expressed using poems. In three weeks I wrote some 50 poems.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever read was "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" by Dr. Westin Price and it changed my life. I already loved Nature and after reading this book, I discovered how to create health for myself. I was never really sick in my life, I just realized as a teenager what was the truth and wanted to obey the laws of God and of Nature.
How do you approach cover design?
My cover was a thought from a dream.
