Interview with Nathaniel Sanders
Published 2014-03-04.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Fort Wayne Indiana. Since I was born and raised in that town I can safely say that anyone with any artistic talent will not be able to get anywhere in that county with their careers, at least it would prove to be very difficult. That being said I guess I have always been a dreamer, I was told that my childhood dreams of becoming a great and well-known writer would eventually fade away. I was told that I had to live up to the standard of society, go to school, graduate, get a job, get a family, sign a 30 year loan for a house.
But I said "To hell with all that I want to live."
I guess maybe my need to rebel and my sense of adventure propelled me into writing, I love making new friends, but I am pretty shy, especially around women, ugh. Only when i am around my closest of friends can I ever feel the need to express myself fully, unless I write.
Writers create worlds.
They create communities, nations, symbols, and ideas and that is really something. Writers of the kings of their own realms and the readers, my favorites, should always be given a warm welcome into the magical worlds we create not just for us but for them. We all feel need to escape reality and living in and growing up in Fort Wayne, well lets just say I wanted to create my own worlds, my stories not bound by the regular standards of society.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything, absolutely everything. I don't want to sound pretentious but it is the greatest and most emotionally satisfying feeling I have ever felt in my life. For somebody to come up and say "Hey man amazing book, I loved it." It's knowing that everything you have worked so hard for, all of the pain, all of the suffering, all of the time spent on my work and it has reached somebody and they enjoyed it.
My fans make me feel complete because my greatest dream is to share my dreams and ideas with anyone and everyone. Not for money for notoriety I guess it's just desire I have, the desire to forge a legacy, and writing is the best way I know how to do that.
What are you working on next?
A New Divide will be coming out soon as the book design and cover design have been completed. But below I will throw a little short summary I wrote about it.
"When the sadistic ruler of a militaristic nation attempts to establish sovereign control over humanity a solar rebellion ignites revolving around an athlete who discovers he is next step in human evolution.
Collin Freeman tells his story of how he overcame the incredible challenges he had to face, the emotional ocean of life and love he experienced and all he would leave behind to become not just a great human being but something else entirely."
Who are the authors that have inspired you the most?
Actually I draw most of my inspiration from music.
Tool
The Glitch Mob
Daft Punk
Iron Maiden
Led Zeppelin
Jimi Hendrix
311
Sublime
Pink Floyd
Metallica
The Gorillaz
Some many more I can't even begin to mention.
Also movie directors:
Quentin Tarantino
Martin Scorsese
Danny Boyle
George Lucas
Stanley Kubrick
Again so many more.
What motivates you to get out of bed each day?
Well I have a day job first of all, and guess you only have one life why not make every day mean something. Fate is a hard thing to determine for instance you could quit smoking today and get hit by a bus tomorrow. You gotta make the most out of it so I try to make a memory out of everyday even if I am trying to finish a difficult writing project.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, listening to music, watching movies, relaxing with my buddies. I'm a pretty normal guy it doesn't take a lot for me to enjoy myself, gotta enjoy the little things.
How do you approach cover design?
I know what i want but I am not to picky that's why I find an artist I like because once they design your cover it's their vision coming to life too. Plus I can't do it by myself and I love art, my cover has to be very detailed and vibrant, otherwise I couldn't appreciate it.
Describe your desk
My couch, or bed or sometimes an extremely comfortable computer chair.
A 45" LED television.
My laptop.
My Audio-Techinica ATH-M50RD PRO DJ headphones (my way of blocking out the world, works great).
My spare trashcan for a computer desk, for now at least.
That's about it.
When did you first start writing?
13 years ago when i was only ten years old. I guess I have always been a dreamer dreaming of telling stories for the rest of my life, as well as making as many friends as I can.

People aren't always known by the words they speak or the deeds they do, sometimes it's by the paths they walk. A courier travels one final road home in a post-nuclear California and learns the significance of what messengers can create by the words they deliver and everything they leave behind down the roads they walk.
