Interview with Frej Wasastjerna

Published 2014-03-03.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, that would be 'En rutinartad spaningsflygning', back around 1960 when I was in my teens. In English that would be 'A Routine Reconnaissance Flight'. As the title indicates, it's a war story in Swedish. It's set in IU1, my Imaginary Universe #1, which I started developing at the age of 7 or thereabouts, so over time it accumulated so many impossibilities and so much silly stuff that I eventually abandoned it. As an example, the aircraft in the story was a P-51 Mustang, in a world with intergalactic space flight. (There was a rationale for this: The development of the warp drive led to all intellectual effort and all economic resources that could be spared being concentrated on space exploration and colonization, so that all other fields stalled or retrogressed.)

The title is rather ironic, since the story ends with the pilot dead.
What is your writing process?
Generally I don't have any structured process for writing. I mull an idea for a period varying from minutes to decades, then I start writing. Sometimes I finish the job, sometimes not. In the former case I still have to turn it into something worth reading, which sometimes involves submitting it to Critters, sometimes not.
How do you approach cover design?
So far there are only two examples of this, and my approach was quite different in those two.

For 'Tochwyatis' I asked for bids at DeviantArt and eventually decided in favor of Dale Ziemianski. Our cooperation went quite well, with me issuing specifications for the cover, Dale producing a picture based on them and asking for more details, me supplying them and so on. This iterative process led to a good result, in my opinion, well worth the money that I paid.

Even so I wanted something cheaper for 'Mixed Nuggets' (I was short of money at the time), and the name suggested that I could look up pictures of various kinds of nuggets on the Internet and combine them into something. That too worked adequately in my opinion.
What do you read for pleasure?
Science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, also non-fiction about history, war, physics, cosmology... and lots of other stuff, both fiction and non-fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
So far the only alternatives I have are my desktop PC and an old (second-hand) Kindle. Mostly I use the former, but occasionally the mobility of the latter leads me to prefer it.
Describe your desk
A mess.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Mostly in Finland, but I spent my first school year in Boston, Massachusetts. During that year I learned English and got acquainted with science fiction, so it probably influenced my writing more than the rest of my childhood and youth together.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.R.R. Tolkien, Poul Anderson, David Weber, Harry Turtledove, George R.R. Martin, Isaac Asimov, Jack Vance, Cordwainer Smith and Hal Clement. OK, I also like Taylor Anderson, Lois McMaster Bujold and a *lot* of others...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Habit -- and the need to take care of my cats, Camillo and Thingol.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Taking care of my cats, Playing computer games, currently mostly Civilization V. Massaging my wife's feet. And a lot of other stuff.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Often from reviews in a blog, usually by John Derbyshire.
