Interview with Jacqueline Marinaro

Published 2013-11-11.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My background is in psychology and I teach at a few colleges. When I'm not teaching I spend time with my husband and my infant son. My son is 7 months old and our favorite thing to do with him is walk around the lake we live on!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I love to read- I always have. What I do is go to the Barnes and Noble site and look at the nook books available. Sometimes I browse new releases and other times I just look through the books by genre. It takes a while, but I tend to spend time browsing books online like I do in a bookstore.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is probably different from most others. I get an idea in my head and it's complete. It's just a matter of getting it all out. I will spend a week or two writing it out as I see it in my head. Once it's out I go back and spend time editing and re-editing it.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love so many books it's hard to name just 5.

Yes I love the Harry Potter and Twilight series. They make me feel like a kid and I love stories that can take me out of my current place and time.

I absolutely love the book Blindness by Jose Saramago. I read that when I was in my early 20s and it quickly became one of my faves. I love how complex and psychological it is. It really makes you think about humanity or lack thereof.

Still Alice by Lisa Genova sent chills through me. It's not a mystery- just an amazing book about a woman who develops early stage Alzheimer's. I was amazed by the integrity of the book and how emotional it was. It was just such a good read- I couldn't put it down.

Lastly, I think the book that I couldn't put down was Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman. It was chilling because it was true. I love books that I can really get into and before you know it- the book is over and you're pining for more!
What do you read for pleasure?
I read anything and everything I can. I spent years going through college and I was forced to read specific books- mostly textbook. I used to relish the time I would spend by myself reading non-school books. I found that anything I enjoyed to read- I would. I don't have a specific genre that I lean toward, but I tend to stay away from romance and sic-fi. Almost anything else I'll give a shot!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPhone! I have the Nook, Kindle, and ibooks app on it. My phone is overloaded with books!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always loved writing. Even when I was in grade school I would write just for fun. When I got older and was in graduate school, I hated writing because I had to write perfectly in proper APA format. I wasn't writing for fun, I was writing for research. Just after getting my master's degree, I wrote this book because I wanted to write just for fun. I was so happy to just write again.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Books have always been a strong part of my life. I know the feeling I get when I read a good book and I hope that my writing can touch others the way certain books have touched me.
What are you working on next?
I have a YA novel- Lucidity Falls - and I'm just finishing the sequel to it. It's about a fallen angel who falls in love with a human.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jodi Picoult, Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, George Orwell, Wally Lamb, Stephenie Meyer, and of course- Sigmund Freud.
