Interview with JL Paul

Published 2014-09-10.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a variety of genres for pleasure. I especially enjoy Stephen King, Dennis Lehane, John Grisham, and Dean Koontz. I like something that grabs me immediately and keeps me turning the pages. I love to reread my favorite books, too, especially the Harry Potter series.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Right now it's the Nook.
Describe your desk
I don't really use a desk. I like to sit in my favorite chair with my laptop. I do have a desk but I rarely use it.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in middle school for English classes but I fell in love with it. At night, I would write silly stories in a notebook that I toted with me wherever I went. I think I still have it somewhere.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I got tired of the whole publishing ordeal. I wanted to have control of what I wrote and how often. I wanted to pick and choose where it was published. I didn't want to be bound by a contract. I like having that freedom. That's not to say that I won't try the traditional route in the future, but for now, self-publishing works for me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I spend my time reading, hanging out with my family, cleaning and/or decorating, or listening to live music.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is when fans email to tell me how much they enjoyed my book or that they loved a character or character name. I enjoy hearing from people. I also love developing characters, putting them in situations, and see where the story goes.
