Interview with Jennifer Crowfoot

Published 2014-01-31.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I most certainly do, although with the passage of time the memory has become rather...shall we say...hazy around the edges.
But certain points stick with me.

I was in primary school, I think I must have been about 8 or 9 years old and like every girl I knew — utterly and totally horse-mad. This particular day I'd sat myself out on the verandah and curled up in one of those wicker-type moon chairs — mine was a trendy 70's style black and white — and with my little squares of blank paper, a handful of coloured pencils and a story in my head I'd started.

Of course my story revolved around a horse and I believe it was a beautiful black horse just like the one in 'Black Beauty' the classic by Anna Sewell. I don't remember the plot — if there was much of one — but I do remember the excitement of writing and then illustrating it.
How do you approach cover design?
I always try and have a cover which reflects the essence of the story and its characters. All of my covers have been clues as to what is contained within and this was a deliberate action. I have tried to make them eye-catching because I know when I look for something to read a pretty, attractive cover will always catch my eye first.
What is your writing process?
Hmm, I believe I'm what's referred to as a 'fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants' type writer. I very rarely plot anything out on paper, I pretty much have the main characters, ideas and settings in my head as I sit down to write. Although, things can, and nearly always do change, and this is one of the things about writing that I love, the characters and what they have to tell me are never static, never completely set in stone.
Their situations can change at the drop of a hat and I just go with the flow, adjusting the story around them to suit.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Oh, a hard one. My book cases, both real and virtual bulge beneath the weight of my precious books. But I'll attempt to answer as best as possible.

Book#1: Anything with Stephen King's name on it. But if I had to pick 'just one', hands-down it would be: 'Salem's Lot. The reasoning behind this choice is that it was so atmospheric and well written and not to mention scary that I was never able to have it in my room as I slept. I always had to take it out when I'd finished reading it for the night. No other horror book has ever had this effect on me. Before or since.

Book#2: The Ancient Future by Traci Harding. I adore this Australian author's works. But this book was my introduction to her characters of modern girl Tori Alexander and her eternal love from the Dark Ages, 'The Dragon', King Maelgwn. This incredible book set me on a life-long addiction to their time hopping adventures.

Book#3: Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice: I adore this book and all of its sequels. Anne's writing is so elegant and descriptive, you literally live and breathe with her characters.

Book#4: The Witching Hour trilogy by Anne Rice: Again a simple sublime trilogy and I simply became lost between the pages of each book.

Book#5: The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. I literally couldn't wait to read each and every book in this series. The writing was wonderful and I fell into the characters' lives so effortlessly.

I really have so many more favourites, and it was incredibly difficult to narrow it down to five. But these would be ones that I will always go back to and re-read. Over and over and over.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read most genres, but I have a soft spot for fantasy, paranormal, horror and adult romance. I love stories with angels, vampires and tattooed bad boys.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have two e-readers and a tablet. Although, for convenience I find I use the tablet to read most of my books on now as I can trawl for books, click buy and instantly download and read straight away. This is pure pleasure.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
For me, the best way to spread the word about my work has been the most effective of all, word of mouth.
I'm always posting small teasers and snippets on my wordpress page and my Facebook page and family and friends help by sharing and telling their friends.
Describe your desk
Glass wraparound desk, laptop, speakers, small carriage clock, printer, a tray containing my story print-outs, 2 owl statues, dragon drink coasters, cork-board and notepads.

When I'm deep in writing my desk is an organised pigsty. I have little scribbled notes to myself and chapter print-outs sprawled everywhere. Pens lay snoozing wherever I've dropped them, usually after doing numerous cross-outs, scribbles and 'reprint this page', scrawled across the top of my printed out work.

Oh, and usually there's a mug of coffee close by as well.

But, when I've finished, or in-between books...well, my desk is a different universe. It fairly sparkles and twinkles, it's tidy and organised.
And, *winking*, you can actually see the floor through the glass top.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This is a very important question. Without the support of Smashwords my humble little stories would still be just for my eyes only, they gave my books a home and made them feel welcome and loved.

Through Smashwords my work has been exposed to millions of readers' eyes and for this I'm eternally grateful.

They took my freshly published work and gave it prime exposure, guaranteeing it would be seen all over the world. They are a blessing for Indie Authors world-wide.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
This is an easy answer. Sharing the stories and characters who lurk in my imagination with other people. I get such happiness out of hearing and reading other peoples' reactions to what I write. And I particularly love when they adore my characters as much as I do.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to tell my story the way I envisaged it in my imagination. Without the restraints of rules and what is /isn't cool/ popular/selling like hotcakes/ trendy. I can take my stories directly to the people who may be interested in reading them.
