Interview with Ken Lindsey

Published 2014-01-25.
What are you working on next?
I have several things going on right now, but I'm putting most of my time into the next Gavin English Story. There is just so much I can do with those characters and that world, and I've always loved Noir.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have several. Stephen King has been a favorite of mine since I was young. He is so damn prolific and talented, and he writes across genres with no problem. Carrie and the Dark Tower Series and It and Desperation... What's not to love.

Then there's Neil Gaiman, who writes so beautifully. Reading Stardust or Ocean at The End of The Lane is like listening to music for me. He just has this amazing way of letting the reader fall into the story and get comfortable there.

Others that I love include C.S. Lewis, George R.R. Martin, Roger Zelazny, J.A. Konrath, and so many more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids. And coffee. My kids and coffee and those little pieces of story that get stuck in your head and just roll around and around and around until you get them down on paper.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I play. I play with the kids, I play with the dogs, I play video games. And I read, which is also a kind of play.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually word of mouth, but sometimes I just grab random things that catch my fancy.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
God yes. I was in high school, (a million or so years ago) and I wrote this awful, Anne Rice vampire rip-off story. It was bad, but it was the first thing I ever finished.

Before you ask, no, it will never see the light of day.
What is your writing process?
It starts at night. I lay in bed wondering what will happen next in the story I'm working on. Then I fall asleep and have crazy dreams which have nothing to do with what I'm writing. Then I get up, make coffee, drink coffee, sit down, and start writing. Sometimes I have to hammer my way through a thousand words of crap before it starts working, but as long as I stick to it, I always wind up putting a few pages of the good stuff down.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I'm pretty sure it about Oscar the Grouch. It had a huge impact.
What do you read for pleasure?
Lots of stuff. Fantasy, thrillers, horror, blogs, news articles, sometimes even YA and kids books. Reading is fun, so whatever I'm reading is for pleasure.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle. They're cheap and easy to use.
