Interview with Kristen Nelson, D.V.M.

Describe your desk
My desk is a mess because I've been working all morning. Before I write, I always clean up my workspace then place two notebooks by my computer. The first is a list of things I need to do. The second is for the book I am writing. When a thought pops into my head, I log it then quickly return to writing without any interruption in the flow.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a small farm in Watertown, Minnesota. That's where I developed a deep love for animals of all kinds!
When did you first start writing?
I took a writing class in junior high. My teacher liked my work and recommended I become a children's author. I thought she was crazy because I hated writing! It took me years to realize I actually do like writing ... it's the editing that I dislike. Once I let myself write without trying to make it perfect on the first draft, my writing took off.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
For me, the greatest joy is hearing how the book touched the reader. I want my words to be meaningful for them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was in first grade, I wrote a story about taking an airplane ride with my dog. Babbie, the French poodle was my co-pilot for this adventure.
What is your writing process?
I start by reviewing the notes I took when I owned the Minnesota Veterinary Center. I select stories that will interest people and guide them in the care of their pets. Then, I create an outline and start writing. When I write, I imagine myself back at the clinic and the stories just flow.
How did cancer effect your writing?
Shortly after the first book in the Coated With Fur series was published, I was diagnosed with cancer. It took the better part of two years before I felt like myself again. Now I am healthy and cancer-free! I look forward to completing the next book in this series more quickly.
How do you approach cover design?
I desperately wanted to use a photo of Radar, the cat who was born without eyes. Unfortunately, I didn't have many good pictures of him. Thanks to Dara Gibson, a talented cover designer, Radar is on the cover and I am thrilled. He was a special cat.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
All the books written by Dr. James Herriot. He had such a wonderful heart for animals.
What do you read for pleasure?
Animal books.
How many pets do you have?
Seven rescued animals. My husband and I share our home with four cats, two parrots and a dog.
