Interview with Linda Meckler

What are your five favorite books, and why?
My Christy and Brad Adventure Series: For ages 8 to adult
Ghost Kids Trilogy
The Bear Chase or AKA The Chase is On
Oak Horse Ranch Mystery
Adventure at Niagara Falls
and
Pixie A Basketball Adventure
and
Space Station Mars A Science Fiction Romance Adventure Adult

I love these fiction books for adventure and creativity. These books are all different and not like anything on the market today. Their stories are completely different and original. Children and adults love them.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read for pleasure just about anything. I love to keep up to date on the usual authors even though in order to produce as many books as they do a year they use other authors to help them for the contents of the story and to write the story.

I love to read new authors. New authors are more creative since they have to prove themselves.

I teach a class through the adult school system in taking your writing, art work, photography, business or whatever to another level and format an e book. In this way the creativity of new authors is just getting started.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like to read a paper book. I am from the old school of touching and smelling a paperback book. But I will read books from electronic devices after all I have over 20 now on these devices. I want to sell my books for these devices because this is the now the time for paper free. I have 2 published books but the few books I have at home I do not want to sell. I give them away as gifts. I want my electronic books to sell.

I really believe in keeping America Green
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Talking to people. Most people have a book or more in them. When I explain that I teach how to format and create an e-book I get a much better response and another student in my class. I can give people ideas about a book they have never even thought of.
Also when students have large books I suggest they break them down into smaller books and make it a series.

A business card works.
Also another way is to have friends and family give me stars and make comments on the 3 websites after they have read my book. These comments are pure gold. Many people want to read what others say about my book before they will purchase it.
When did you first start writing
I started writing in high school. I loved to make up short stories. But that was in the day of the typewriter and with moving so much in the past years, it all got trashed. While I was home for awhile raising my kids I started writing poetry for greeting cards. I went to the library and spent hours investigating publishing companies for greeting cards. In those days your wrote your poem on one side of an index card and your name and address on the back. Then I sent the whole packet to a publisher. I didn't sell any poetry for cards but I did get responses that I was creative and way before my time with my card suggestions. Now my suggestions have been in use for years. So who knows?
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am in the process of re-writing my book E book formatting for fun and profit. I teach a class through the adult school system on how to Format, create a cover, marketing and editing tips etc. I then wrote a book about the class I created. When my sister was here for Thanksgiving I was showing her how to format her photography book and upload it to a website for sale. She never completed her book but I did learn that I needed to rewrite this book. I needed to make it more user friendly. When I teach my class I also teach Microsoft Word and in my book now I also teach Microsoft Word. You need to know the basics to format your e book.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is an amazing website. I pull my hair out every time I try to format my book. I have even watched hours of video on youtube on smashwords formatting. I even discovered some errors in the youtube video which creates more confusion in my mind. But I did publish one of my books called, Adventure in Niagara Falls and I sold 20 books within 5 minutes.
That definately brought back my desire to format my books correctly for smashwords. I'm trying but I must say please make it easier.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to write books for children of all ages to read. My Christy and Brad Adventure Series came about completely by accident. In these 4 books is many stories of my own. They are high adventure and mystery and for children of 8 to adult. I love to hear from readers, "my son carried my Kindle around all weekend and didn't even want to eat until he finished my book Ghost Kids Trilogy."
That really reaches my heart. Children need to read. Electronic games are fun but reading, there is not any replacement for a good book. You will learn something from every book you read in your lifetime.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me. Without fans there are no book sales or anybody to say, " I loved your book. My book called, Fight Your Medical Insurance Nightmares!! Let me show you how is an example. My neighbor bought a paper book from me when it first came out. She came over the next day and said she had read it twice. It had already saved her money. Her husband had Cancer. He had to have laboratory work weekly. It had been costing them $80.00. After reading my book she asked the doctor's office to send the lab work to a lab under her contracted plan of her insurance company. The laboratory tests from then on didn't cost a penny. Knowledge is gold.
What are you working on next?
I have been taking art classes of all kinds for the last few years. I would love to do some art books. Picture books for children. Also pattern books. I am not a real artist like some of the students in my classes. They win awards and there work is outstanding. I sort of draw and paint in my own style and my art teacher just rubs his head.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I'm always thinking about things to write about. Sometimes its a word I hear, a picture I see or a book I've written. This leads to another how to e book usually. Sometimes it inspires me to paint for hours on end and they all end up being filed in a big tub. When I'm writing or painting I lose track of time and don't eat or drink for hours. I never even think about it.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I teach a class in e-book formatting for fun and profit at the adult school. I love to read my students books. They are so creative and interesting. What I found is that they all make the same editing mistakes especially; in fiction. This inspired me to write the e book, Fiction Writers Screw-ups. See one thing inspires another.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No I don't that was so many years ago but I do remember some bits and pieces about a story that got lost in the shuffle years ago. Maybe someday I would like to recreate that one.
What is your writing process?
I write by computer. I do not use paper and pen. First of all my handwriting is so bad I'd never know what I had written. Sometimes when the story is throbbing through my head and I can't get it out I will use a tape recorder. Once I have it down somewhere I can relax. A few times I was so lost in thought about a story I was writing in my head I've gotten lost and almost into an accident while driving.
Describe your desk
That is a real laugh. I live in such a small space I rarely use a desk or table anymore. My lap is my desk and office.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the East Coast. In my Christy and Brad Adventure series of 4 books I used many of my childhood stories. My Christy and Brad series is close to my heart. I know the characters as members of my family.
Ghost Kids Trilogy
The Bear Chase or AKA The Chase Is on
Oak Horse Ranch Mystery
Adventure in Niagara Falls.

The book Adventure in Niagara Falls is so close tome since I lived close to the Falls growing up. I miss the Falls living on the West Coast.
