Interview with W. Paul Dunn

Published 2014-05-30.
What reading material draws your attention most?
Truthful episodes, documentaries, biographies that reveal factual, mind-expanding things to contemplate. Adventures in less-common, but verifiable "realities" that awaken and challenge me. Inspiring and uplifting accounts that touch my heart. True, clean humor. Accounts of personal victories over adversity.

I don't need written distractions so much as I need inspiration and avenues of discovery.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Giving of myself in whatever ways I can give meaningfully to others. Listening to enlivening or healing music. Appreciating the wonders of Creation and the best gifts of humankind. I've always been an explorer and adventurer at heart.
To what do you attribute your successes?
Refusing to yield to discouragement or to be defeated by adversity. I can't attribute meaningful successes to myself so much as I can to God's guidance (when I've followed it) and to those who have planted in me the faith and hope and love that always wins.
Do you remember the first thing you ever wrote?
Early in my teens I began writing poetry. I still do. Any stories I wrote were short, usually incomplete. Most all my life I've had to work before and after school. This applies as well to my years as a public school teacher. So my time for creating was limited to what I could achieve and retain in my mind. My first remembered "creations" were piano compositions (unwritten) when I was seven or eight years old.
