Interview with Mellyssa Diggs

Published 2014-03-16.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Chester, Pennsylvania with my blind father. Being that I am a very generous and caring individual, music was my outlet later to develop into writing and poetry.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing officially in 2000, sometime in grade school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My poetry book is a some what like a memoir of writings and the emotions going on in my life. I was not depressed or mentally ill, I wanted to jot down every memory and emotion that happened in my life especially as a teenager.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am a graphic designer, and a songwriter, this is another artistic outlet I want to develop.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing gives me the ability to jot down all my emotions and thoughts in detail rather than taking a photo or simply writing a journal.
What do your fans mean to you?
When that time comes, when I develop fans of my own. I will be able to think them every single day because I know I am just not writing in an "empty room".
What are you working on next?
Hopefully, I am able to create a Vol.2 worth of poems together. That will be my next project.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are too many to name because I enjoy reading but a few do stand out: Maya Angelou, Mary Higgins Clark, and Langston Hughes.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that I have friends, that support me, my organization, and my family gets me out of bed every morning to do what I love doing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My time is spent embracing my artistic talent: singing, computers, designing. Other thing include working out and playing tennis. I am site the athletic individual.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I simply go through books stores and see if there are ebooks on the internet or by recommendation.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I written was a Sailor Moon fan fiction.I was kind-of scared to do so because everyone was doing it and I didn't want the story to suck so I did a little research on how to write a short anime fanfiction.
How do you approach cover design?
Being that I am a graphic designer, typography and layout is everything. The way the cover looks determines the audience who get curious to read the book.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use with my Windows Surface tablet that has the Nook app and download PDF's to read as well.
