Interview with Rebecca Dunning

Published 2014-01-09.
Describe your desk
Unfortunately, for my husband we share an office. While he is intensely tidy, I am a messy worker. I don't understand because I love a clean home. My work space is always in an uproar. Luckily for him, we have separate desks.
When did you first start writing?
Forever. It was a beautiful outlet growing up to escape in my own written world.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted something my preteen kids could read that wasn't full of bullying, disrespect and drama and began to scribble ideas. The idea just came to me.

I've been inspired by Lewis and Tolkien in the past by their blend of mythology, history and redemptive themes... I think this played a part, though I would never pretend to say I can write like them.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I found at this time in history, if you are not a well-known author it is difficult to get signed and if you do the royalties are lower. These days you have to do a tremendous amount of marketing even if you are signed with a larger publishing house. I thought if I'm going to do a lot of the work, I would like to enjoy the larger bounty.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I've loved the coupon codes, which has allowed me to get the word out more easily. I've run some contests, where folks won free coupon codes to download it. It's been intensely helpful.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I feel most normal when I write. It's like I was made for the moment that a character comes to life and they say something wise and profound.
What do your fans mean to you?
There is no author without friends and fans and friends who become fans. It's very vulnerable to put your writing out for the world to see. When a fan leaves a positive review, it really is quite rewarding.
What are you working on next?
Book 2 of The Awen is coming along slowly.
Who are your favorite authors?
I mentioned Tolkien and Lewis. My very favorite author, Stephen Lawhead, also has a history of writing Celtic Redemptive Fiction.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids. I actually am not always inspired to get up, since creative writing ideas come to me at night. However, they need to catch a ride to school and I'd be a horrible parent to not get them there...
