Interview with Rochelle Ragnarok

How do you approach cover design?
Buy a premade cover or hire a professional.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Hm, this one is rough.

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice
Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite
Necroscope series by Brian Lumley

I'm sure I'm way past five books by including an entire series lol!

These are the books I can read over and over again. I love the characters, the style, everything. I love Anne Rice's Vampires when I was younger and I was very much into Vampires that killed but were also soft in the sense that under the right circumstances I could be spared. But as time passed I wanted something darker and more gritty. I wanted less of the gothic poetry and something a bit more real. I eventually discovered Poppy z Brite and Brian Lumley and I have to say that I would never want to meet any of their Vampires. lol! But that's also what I love the most about them.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I can't really say for certain. I've done a lot to try and get my books noticed. I've given away books on the streets along with bookmarks. I've literally walked all over Times Square at one time leaving my bookmarks everywhere I could. I did the same when I went on vacation in Florida. lol! I can't tell if it's been successful as I've never stuck around long enough to find out. Too busy running away!

I think the giveaway on Goodreads has been really good. Along with Amazon's marketing service for kindle. Though Goodreads is charging a lot of money for giveaways now and I haven't used them since.
Describe your desk
A futon on the floor. I have a desk where my gaming computer is hooked up but I rarely use it. It's a mess of notepads and scattered markers et al on it. I can clean it up nicely when I want my room to look good.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Maybe this is a bit sad or crazy, but I hated the area I grew up in and I hated going to school because of the other students. My first stories were horror based because of that. I pretty much used to write about how I would trap them all inside a school and kill them. Later I began to assign non classmates as the victims and random axe murderers as the killers. I'm totally normal, I swear. ;]
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I love Smashwords. They really make it easy to publish and they relieve so much stress from the daunting task of getting a novel to an audience. I can now see my books at places such as B&N, itunes et al without having to submit each novel to each individual retailer. I've come in contact with so many great authors and readers there and now my books are available for preorder because of Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love coming up with a new world and characters. I think that's my greatest joy. Nothing beats sitting around and conjuring up a ruined world, gritty bandits, two crazy people in love, and so on. I'll never get over the feeling of seeing a world come together, when it sifts from fragmented pieces of an imagination to a tangible thing.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Easy question now move on. LOL! No really, I love my fans. I've saved every email sent and I always make sure I reply as soon as I can. They brighten my day when I feel down about my writing. It lets me know that there are people who enjoy my stories and want to read more. I really like that connection.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Gaming. lol! I love it. Just pop in Assassin's creed Black Flag or a Telltale game et al and I'm in the zone. Sometimes I even play the game when I have writer's block. I just think about my story and play until my brain is only focused on the game. But when I shut it off I head back to the computer and end up cranking out a few pages. If it works don't fix it, right? I also love watching anime and reading mangas. Cooking is always fun and watching something on Hulu as well. Lately I've been feeling the need to tackle a more hands on project so I want to try my hand at learning the bass guitar or something.
