Interview with S.P. Grogan

Published 2015-01-16.
What is your writing process?
Usually a stream of ideas flow onto a very rough page, which I go back and edit several times. The battle I have is procrastination, and I fight constantly to set aside writing time, and when I do write a story gushes forth usually with little changes to the finished plot. Sometimes I do outlining to try and see ahead in the plot. And several times I have to write out a list of characters, both to remember name spellings as well as go back to put more description into the person created. .
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I have always been a prolific reader. In third grade, the teacher gave a good grade for reading a book and then creating a small book review, with cover and explanation inside. I did at least 50 of those. Later I was drawn into 'swashbuckling' adventures. I read a lot of 'We Were There' series which gave me insight into historical writing, which my books reference. And introspectively, as an only child, I had to use my imagination to create friends and put us into many hero fighting evil scenarios.
How do you approach cover design?
I am big into creativity. Involved in the city's art commission I have tried to use art not as a secondary filler but as an integral partner. I miss the old days where literature would use interior art to convey the plot. Think of the book reaching all the senses. In Captain Cooked, I put in recipes to convey the feel of the islands, and also add in artwork and photos from top Hawaiian artists. In the upcoming 'Atomic Dreams', I use the supporting art of famed tiki surrealist-Polynesian artist, Brad Parker.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am usually reading three to four books at the same time, and depending on delivery system; I pad to Kindle to hardback. I am back into adventures, enjoying space opera sci-fi, to capture the hero warrior in me. I appreciate good writing. Most recently, 'Unbroken' and 'The Martian' I have consumed. On the way to work I usually have an audio book playing. Since I am the grown-up, I can read what I like, so I avoid the tragedies or maudlin or heartbreak...I can find those in real life.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
With 'Vegas Die' which was a local Las Vegas mystery, I had very good experience doing book signings at the major book stores, mainly because I am good at selling, and can usually fifty percent of the time make a sale to strangers

When did you first start writing?
I have always been writing since early though I don't know if I am perfect with sentence structure. I learned from a college professor that if you write 'I brung the flowers' and it conveys the message and fits the tone and flow, it is a correct sentence. In high school, editor of Creative Writing magazine, in college, newspaper editor; in business world, had a stint in public relations, and wrote book and music reviews for major daily newspaper.
What's the story behind your latest book?
November, 2014, will be released 'Terror and Revenge'. I thought writing a plot line about capturing Osama bin Laden and his trial (where he would be acquitted!) would be fascinating. Like novel, 'Court martial of George Armstrong Custer'. In the middle of writing my story, the SEALS got bin Laden, so the plot changed. What a reader might not get until near book end is I have written some serious messages about: nuclear waste and future possible terrorist attacks on the U.S. And I like the fact that I have made one Islamic terrorist a 'dark hero'. Hope readers comment on that!
What is unique about your new novel, Atomic Dreams at the Red Tiki Lounge?
All my past books have had an element of 'quest' to them, Atomic Dreams show various people who appear and are destined to be famous in post World War 2, and the heroes of the book indirectly nudge them in the right direction. There is even a 'quiz' at the back of the book to see if the reader can identify the person and what they became famous for...once again, my goal is an 'interactive reader'.
Tell us about your most recent book?
Atomic Dreams at the Red Tiki Lounge. This is an action-romance-current history with an alternate reality thrown in. It is set in 1946 Honolulu and is an adventure, race against the bomb exploding, and fighting gods and godzillas, along with meeting people who will become famous, post world war 2. Readers should enjoy.
