Interview with Shauna Scheets

Where did you grow up?
All over the U.S.; my dad was an Air Force pilot.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing as soon as I learned how to write. It might seem tautologous, but it's true. I've had stories and worlds in my head trying to get out since I could hold a pen.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This is always a difficult question to answer, because I feel like it would be too easy for me to give away something. Especially since I know what is going to happen in the rest of the series.

Suffice it to say that the Caillte Cycle is dedicated to exploring the human condition, in a YA, with a cross-over to adult, fantasy. Basically, I tried to write it so it would be enjoyable and appropriate for both audiences. From the feedback I have had (from both readers of the fantasy genre and readers of other genres), it is well-written and a well-crafted fantasy world, that allows for the emergence and exploration of its characters. I have found that fiction can hold as much truth as non-fiction, sometimes more. That is why we continue to tell stories. As humans, whether we see it or not, we love to learn. That is how, as individuals and a mass, we have survived. If you want to know more about how and what happens, read the book(s). I love it when the reader finds something that I didn't know was there. That's why I wrote them!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to share stories with more than just the people I meet in my life. Also, I know several other individuals that have had success in this arena, and they like/love my work.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love those that were also linguists, historians and philosophers. I grew up studying Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Plato, Socrates, J.R.R. Tolkien, the Brothers Grimm, and J.K. Rowling, to name a few.
How do you approach cover design?
I love creating my own templates, and doing any supplemental artwork myself. Art, in all media (from pencil, to watercolor, to oils, to clay, to digital and software-based), is something that provides another form of expression for me. It is a way of getting closer to the story that is asking to be born. As Plato would say, it is a way of getting closer to the "form".
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use any Android-based tablet, and install free e-readers.
Describe your desk
Messy, if you look at the scraps of paper around. Clean, if you look at the places where I have tidied recently. I guess you could say it is in constant flux.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean promise. Not only am I grateful for each and every one that considers themselves a fan, but I also see it as a sign and a commitment to thought.
What are you working on next?
I am working on the next book in the Caillte Cycle, after I have my baby, of course.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to watch ice hockey (used to play when I was younger). I also love to create all forms of artwork and to garden.

My most recent obsession (other than writing) has been studying on permaculture and the inter-connectivity of plant systems to their environment. I like to create botanicals (lotions, salves and the like). Did I mention I'm a bit of a nerd?

I also like to do yoga and meditate, in those free moments.
