Interview with Shawn O'Toole

Published 2013-09-20.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I ponder many things and have much to say. I like to articulate my own thoughts, feelings and fancies into fun stories.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has provided an accommodating means of sharing my work and finding the inspiring works of others.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Realizing and improving my notions and fancies into something fun, documented and possibly enduring. I love a good story and enjoy writing the ones I already yearn for.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. No story is good enough to be meaningful without people who appreciate it.
What are you working on next?
I am refining and publishing works I have already written. I always have a new horror story just before Halloween as part of a "Halloween Challenge" among friends.
Who are your favorite authors?
Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, J.R.R. Tolkien, George Orwell, Ray Bradbury, T.K. Wade and Donald White.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Making every day meaningful, somehow. Nothing matters unless we care enough to make it relevant. I care.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing and creating table-top games (mostly role-playing games), drawing pictures, going for walks, riding my bike or simply socializing with family and friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I browse, people suggest titles or I simply happen upon them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, but it was only a scene. I was in sixth grade and wrote about a man fleeing from Nazis. I was inspired by a short story about a German officer in World War Two who helped Norwegians protect a bell or something from being taken away by the occupation.
What is your writing process?
I seek and devour every source of possible inspiration for some vague idea already forming in my mind. I then start sketching scenes and scenarios. If the spark becomes a flame, I then start from the beginning and connect the sketch scenes I liked. When I have completed a rough draft, I finalize the names of characters, places and things and delete or consolidate disparate aspects into something coherent and consistent. I then repeatedly reread the story and sections thereof. I meticulously edit and try to trim as much off as possible: I always strive for eloquence and more of less. My endeavor is never finished until I either discontinue the effort as a dead end or am thoroughly pleased.
